What are Crypto Punks?
CryptoPunks is a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Ethereum blockchain. The Larva Labs studio, composed of Canadian software developers Matt Hall and John Watkinson, launched the project in June 2017. The London punk scenes, the cyberpunk movement, and electronic music artists Daft Punk all influenced the experimental project.
Why are they so popular?
They are the first NFT collection of their kind ever to be created on the ETH Blockchain before most people ever understood what an NFT was, the Cryptopunks collection was formed. They were decades ahead of their time.
There are 10,000 CryptoPunks (6,039 men and 3,840 women), all of whom have been made digitally scarce thanks to blockchain technology.
Each one was created using algorithms and computer code, so no two are exactly the same, with some qualities being rarer than others.
Also, Bored Ape Yacht Club (Yuga Labs), one of the most well-known projects in the NFT space, has purchased CryptoPunks from Larva Labs, giving the famous NFT brand ownership more fame and two of the most significant Web3 IPs.
Interesting fact:
A CryptoPunk can have a maximum of seven features. However, the only CryptoPunk with seven features is #Punk 8348 and it's the only one in existence.
It has a cigarette, an earring, a mole, buck teeth, vintage shades, a top hat, and a large beard.
CryptoPunks can have no traits, however, the majority of them have two or three.
